The Nightstands

They were married over forty years ago. One of their early purchases was two identical pieces of furniture. They went one each side of their bed head as nightstands with some storage space. They moved house once and remodeled the second house twice. This last remodel was beautifully conceived and superbly executed. In the meantime, their family grew up and left the nest. Their eclectic art collection grew as did their wine cellar. At some point one or both of them realized that their matching nightstands were totally out of step with the room interior as well as their current aesthetic. New nightstands.

Establishing the practical characteristics of a design solution are generally not too difficult to resolve. The functional aspect is usually a case of “this or that” – doors or drawers for instance. The gamut of the visual features is a different matter. The case is veneered with Macassar Ebony outside and Fiddleback English Sycamore on the inside. The world’s your oyster because most wood species are still available as veneer.

The form of the piece, in this instance, came with a different request. A center support. Not a common request with a deep three drawer case above. Rigidity was an obligation. Half inch thick aircraft aluminum provided. The drawer pulls are also aircraft aluminum on a Gabon Ebony insert. The result is in the eye of the beholder.
