Booze Box

One of the requirements in the fourth and final year of my design studies, 1962 to be exact, was a “testimony” piece.  A piece of furniture which was an exposé, a testament, of one’s design and making skills.  I chose a wine cabinet.  It has three compartments with fold down doors.  The outside ones have racks which can hold eighteen bottles of wine.  The center holds however many bottles or glasses you can stand in there.

The result is a very heavy box which is to be about thirty six inches from the floor.  My goal was to design an elegant but solid support in contrast to the cuboid lump.

Almost sixty years later, the same problem presents itself but this time it’s a pair of cabinets. This time, however, stability between the heavy upper and the delicate lower portions is just about absolute with the aid of the wall.
