Brown Oak Bookshelf


Brown oak is ordinary oak which has been infested by a fungus.   The fungus invades the log and is active until it been sawn into boards and the boards kiln dried.  Kiln drying kills the fungus.   All the wood used to make this piece came from the same log which was quarter sawn.

 

Two technical features of this piece illustrate the attention to workmanship.  One is the protrusion and overlap of the shelves in relation to the sides and the other is the exposed joinery.  In this case what you see is called a through and wedged twin mortise and tenon
