The piece of rock came with the stricture that it could not be used as a kitchen counter. It has some attractive red veins in it, probably lines of weakness. Didn’t matter. It was to be the centerpiece of the dining table that would comfortably seat eighteen. In use, it is the place where tureens and serving plates are placed, with or without trivets.
The geometry of the octagonal legs provides the visual and practical connect between these major and minor elements.
The foot of each leg is reduced and finished with gold leaf
The green insert in the edge of the top is the link between the top and the small forest of legs under.
The twelve inch wide figured maple border accommodates the gold lame placemats woven by Susan, glasses, cutlery and napkins.
