Purple Tables

The goal was to design a group of tables with a distinct commonality.

The veneered bird’s eye maple tops go so far but the various shapes and heights of the pieces are not the ingredients that bind.

It had to be the legs, so how about combining a group of solid geometry pieces?

A cylinder, a sphere, a conic and a hemisphere – all turnings.

As well, make the joining rails sympathetic to the leg shape.  Where the rail meets the leg, the “sympathy” is obvious.

In the center of the rail is a semi-circular cut out.  Into that cut out can be fitted a disc so the center of the rail has a circle in it.  There are any number of designs for this center circle or it can just be left out.

Such an assembly of shapes had to be “dematerialized,” the fancy designer word to “spray it the same color,” so that the shapes don’t get confused by the different colors of the turned wood.  The sphere is covered with a mixture of gold and silver leaf as is the foot – the hemisphere at the bottom of the leg.

Designing the legs and rails as well as deciding what wood to use for the top may seem a cockeyed way to design a table, but is it?  Having satisfied myself of the worth of this combination, I put it to use on a variety of formal geometric shapes, a square, a rectangle and an equilateral triangle.
